Freedom Writers: Character Analysis
Students are reading Freedom Writers, and then watching the movie. Today, we are finishing the movie. Use the graphic organizer in this document to keep notes on the characters: Freedom Writers Video worksheet.doc
After the movie, get into small groups (3-5). On a large sheet of paper, answer the following questions:
- What is the main message of this movie?
- Write down the main message.
- Each group will briefly discuss if they agree, and why or why not?
- Who was your favorite character in the movie? Why?
- Each group will do a character analysis on one person from the movie.
- This will discuss how this character changed from the beginning to the end.
- What they overcame.
- Why did they change?
- What was one important event that made a difference?

Teacher prompt: “Why might different audiences interpret the same oral text in different ways? Give examples to support your opinion.”

- discuss similarities and differences between oral and print texts on the same topic, focusing on specific elements such as the accuracy and relevance of information;
- debate the wisdom of the choices made by a character depicted in an oral biography, based on ideas about what their own choices might have been)

Freedom Writers – Tupac – Keep your head up – lyrics
- What lyrics do you relate to the most? Why?
- Do any lyrics remind you of the characters in the story? How?
- How do these lyrics differ from a lot of rap songs you hear on the radio today? Which artists have positive messages? Which artists have ‘not so positive’ messages? Who do you respect more? Why?
- What do you think TuPac’s background is? Why are these messages important to him?
- How does the form (rap) affect the interpretation of the message? Would this be more or less effective as an essay? Poem? Speach?
- What is it about Tupac that makes people listen to his message? What makes him credible?
- Find a metaphor in this song. Explain how it’s effective in conveying Tu Pac’s message.
- Who is the target audience of Verse One? Verse Two? Verse Three? How do you know? Provide evidence from the lyrics.
- What is the main message in each verse? Do you agree with Tu Pac’s message? Why or why not?
- Extension: What is the connection to this article? A letter to Victoria’s Secret from a Father. What other connections can you make to English class? To school? To self?
